The book concentrates on the
Postal Service in occupied Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania and related districts
known as "OSTLAND". Here is a closer look at this era and of the
inception of the mail system until its collapse. Illustrations of envelopes
posted in these areas together with bilingual
listings of towns within each region are included for specialized ‘stamp
collectors."
Due to the political map of Europe
during the turbulence of the last century, so many towns and villages have
changed their names. Many of the names that appear on postmarks no longer
appear on modern maps.
For many years I also contributed
much of this information internally in Philatelic magazines, which are no
longer readily available, for that reason I decided to share this information
within these pages. Herein is presented an overview of a turbulent period
when an individual’s main concern was of survival
The book also concentrates on the
earliest 'Emergency' local postal
services within the Russian Zone in Germany are also featured during the
early period (1945-1946). It is hoped this will assist those who seek obscure
philatelic information, or an overview of this tragic era.
This work is not a substitute for
a specialized catalogue, which are still of importance as they give much
technical information on printing details, paper used, perforations and
watermarks, which are outside the scope of this book. It is hoped this will be received as a
form of historical preservation, especially as a reference for those who
cannot locate a town of that era which will most probably be listed within
these pages.
